Oosterstaketsel - Observation point

The Oosterstaketsel is one of the finest viewpoints in Blankenberge. This long walking pier lies on the eastern side of the harbour channel and extends far into the North Sea.

What can you expect at the Oosterstaketsel?

It is a wonderful place to enjoy the sea breeze, watch the boats and admire the coastline of Blankenberge from a distance.

• Beautiful sea views: From the pier, you can look far out across the North Sea. On clear days, you can see the coastline towards Zeebrugge, the wide beaches of Blankenberge and the harbour entrance where boats sail in and out.
• View of the harbour channel: The Oosterstaketsel lies directly alongside the navigation channel. This means you are close to the spot where pleasure boats, fishing boats and other vessels enter the harbour or head out to sea. It makes the pier a lively viewpoint, especially on sunny days and during the boating season.
• Lighthouse at the end: At the end of the Oosterstaketsel stands the lighthouse of Blankenberge. The current concrete lighthouse dates from 1951 and is now operated fully automatically.
• Characteristic wooden structure: The pier has a recognisable structure of wooden piles and creates a beautiful maritime scene along the coast. The Oosterstaketsel is also protected as a monument and originally dates back to the development of the fishing harbour in the 19th century. The current structure was rebuilt after the Second World War.
• Photogenic spot: With its wooden piles, the sea, the seagulls, the lighthouse and the wide horizon, the Oosterstaketsel is a popular place for photos. The view is especially atmospheric at sunset, during rough seas or in low winter sunlight.
• Brasserie at the end: There is also a brasserie at the end of the pier, so you can combine your walk with something to eat or drink while enjoying a sea view.

Practical information

The Oosterstaketsel is located on the Zeedijk, near the harbour channel of Blankenberge. You can use the area around the Félicien Ropshelling as a point of reference.

• Easy to combine with a walk: You can easily combine the Oosterstaketsel with a walk along the Zeedijk, the beach, the harbour area or the Pier. The small ferry across the harbour channel also makes the area extra enjoyable for tourists.

For tourists, it is mainly a short but beautiful stop: you walk out onto the pier, enjoy the view, watch the boats and then head back towards the beach, harbour or town centre. In strong winds or stormy weather it can be very blustery, but that is exactly what makes it a true coastal experience.
